Best Friends

My project is the second chapter of the Exquisite Suburbia series that investigates a world of perfection and how families are influenced by our modern culture. The series is an evolving story that examines both powerful cultural and societal influences on the family as a whole and individually. The first chapter told the story of a modern day housewife living in a utopian suburbia and her everyday exchanges with her family. The second chapter is named “Best Friends” and it is a fictional narrative that focuses on another member of the perfect family, an adolescent girl. In this chapter, the story continues with the focus on a little girl and her life with her best friend living in a sprawling, suburban home. The project describes their friendship and how each girl is connected to one another in a complex relationship which involves a labyrinth of the conscious and the unconscious mind with influences from the child’s suburban surroundings and family interactions. The isolation and vulnerability of childhood is revealed to offer a story of the imagined and the possible. But with the innocence of childhood, certain environmental messages and cultural norms seep into the psyche and start to form behaviors, aesthetics, ideas and perspectives. Through my project, a story of childhood friends is illustrated and involves layers of information from our innovative and changing environment. My goal is to provide a narrative that exhibits how influences can affect children and innately drive a child’s ambitions and personality.
